Spray Gun Setting that Every Commercial Painter Should Master

Mastering a commercial spray gun- whether a high-production airless or a precision HVLP unit - requires balancing pressure, fluid volume, and fan pattern to match your coating and surface. The right adjustments ensure flawless coverage, maximize material transfer, and can eliminate costly rework on commercial job sites. As a small business owner, every bit of profit matters, so we have compiled a list of settings you should master as a commercial painter in the industry that will save you time, money, and leave your customers completely satisfied with their project.


Equipment & Pressure

In this section, we will be discussing typical equipment you would be using as a commercial spray painter, as well as proper pressure settings, fluid volume, consistency, material control, and pattern control. Let's dive in -

  • Pressure Settings (PSI)- Proper pressure is the difference between a smooth finish and wasteful overspray. Depending on the type of commercial sprayer equipment setup you have, we have some tips on controlling air pressure to provide proper atomization and prevent coating failures such as paint runs or "orange peel" effect.

Airless Sprayers: Most commercial coatings spray optimally around 1500psi to 2500psi. It is recommended to always start low and increase the pressure until "tailing" completely disappears. "Tailing" is an effect that looks like thick, uneven streaks at the edges of your fan and is caused by too low air pressure pushing your material through the spray gun. 

HVLP Sprayers: These sprayers typically operate between 10psi and 30psi at the air cap. The operator can easily adjust this dynamic setting with the trigger pulled to ensure a smooth, uniform atomization without spitting. The ideal baseline settings on HVLP (and even LVLP setups) are having your air pressure inlet set between 22-26psi, fluid volume between 2 and 2.5 full turns, and adjusting your fan pattern to 1/4 turn BACK from fully open. This will allow for full and even coverage and help to maintain perfectly atomized edges. 

  • Fluid Volume & Consistency - To achieve optimal paint consistency and fluid volume with a commercial spray gun, you must balance your air pressure, fluid flow, and fan pattern while matching your equipment to the material's viscosity. For base coats or thin lacquers, it is best to turn your fluid volume to 2 turns out and adjust your air pressure to 20-25psi to prevent material waste. For clear coats, increase your fluid volume to roughly 2.5 turns out and bump your air pressure between 26 and 28psi to ensure the heavy material slicks out into a glossy, defect-free finish. When spraying primers, it is best to use a lower air pressure between 20-25psi, but use a wider-open fluid valve to accommodate the thicker material.
  • Pattern Control -Mastering Pattern control allows commercial painters to eliminate overspray, prevent runs, and achieve flawless finishes. Professionals achieve this by optimizing fluid pressure, having the correct tip size, maintaining distance and speed, and utilizing proper triggering techniques. Let's discuss the first and one of the most important factors: your posture. When spraying, you should never arc or flex your wrist. Your arm must stay entirely parallel (perpendicular to the wall) throughout the entire stroke. Move your arm at a steady, consistent speed. Passing too slowly can cause drips, while moving too quickly can lead to thin, uneven coverage.

 

Mastering Your Spray Technique

No setting on any spray gun will save a poor technique. Commercial spray painters should always master these physical parameters before completing any large-scale commercial job. In the previous paragraph, we touched on a few basics, which, as you will notice, continue to be a theme throughout the technique portion of this blog.


  1. Identifying Your Tip - The Spray Tip dictates both the fan width and the volume of paint applied, fundamentally controlling the pattern of the spray. You should familiarize yourself with the tip's mathematical breakdown. The first number on the tip indicates your fan size when you take the number and double it. The last two digits indicate the hole size in inches (USA), by adding a zero behind the decimal point. A standard tip, like the 515, for instance, will translate into a 10in fan with a 0.015in hole size for the material flow. Wide fans are ideal for broad walls and ceilings. Narrower fans are essential for trim, doors, and cabinetry to maintain absolute control. Most tip manufacturers also have a tip color coding system for ease of identification on the job.
  2. Distance - Strive to maintain a strict 10"-14" distance from the substrate or surface being painted. Moving too close causes sags or flooding, while moving too far causes dry spray and uneven finish texture.
  3. Trigger Pull Control - Start your arm motion before engaging the trigger, and release it after completing the pass off the edge of the substrate to prevent pooling. Your speed should be consistent and not too slow.
  4. The 50/50 Overlap - Always overlap your previous pass by exactly 50%, aiming for a seamless, even film thickness. The center of your spray fan should directly hit the edge of the previous pass. The 50/50 overlap method ensures a uniform coating and an even finish. It is also a best practice to complete multiple thin coats versus risking a heavy overspray, which can lead to a tacky, uncured paint coat.


Environmental Conditions

Whether you are an Interior or Exterior commercial spray painter, environmental conditions will always play a role in your project. Mastering environmental conditions is the difference between a durable, flawless finish and costly callbacks with frustrated customers. Painters must monitor and control four critical variables: temperature, relative humidity, dew point, and air quality or ventilation to make sure optimal paint adhesion, drying, and curing occur.

  • Temperature - Temperature directly dictates paint viscosity and the chemical curing process. The industry standard for ideal application falls between 50F and 85F for acrylic latex, and 40F and 90F for oil-based paints. Below these thresholds, paint thickens, which disrupts smooth leveling and can cause cracking or prevent the paint film from ever properly forming. Temperatures over 90F can cause paint to dry too quickly. This leads to brush marks, peeling, and "mud cracking."
  • Relative Humidity (RH Factor) - Relative Humidity determines how fast water or solvents evaporate from your wet paint film. You should aim for an RH between 40% and 70%. RH exceeding 85% means there is too much moisture in the air. The paint can not dry properly, resulting in a dull finish, blistering, or water getting trapped beneath the coating, which can lead to peeling down the road. On the opposite end, RH that is too low or "dry" causes paint to skin over prematurely, trapping solvent inside.
  • Dew Point & Condensation - Dew point dictates when invisible airborne moisture turns into liquid condensation. The surface temperature of the substrate must be at least 5F above the dew point. If the Surface is colder than the dew point, condensation will form right as you begin painting. Painting over condensation traps water behind the paint film, almost guaranteeing rapid coating failure. Professional commercial painters use psychrometers to calculate this safely. Modern phone apps, like the Weather Channel, also provide a rough estimate of your expected dew point daily.
  • Ventilation and Airflow - Proper air circulation is crucial for both solvent evaporation and safety, especially in enclosed commercial spaces. Painters must ensure high air turnover to pull toxic VOC fumes out of the building. Using Low-VOC or Zero-VOC formulations helps maintain safe air quality. If you are painting the exterior, light breezes can help your paint dry; however, strong winds can end up blowing dust, dirt, and debris into your wet paint, ultimately ruining the finish. If you are working outside, make sure you have proper dust and debris control if wind is unavoidable. This could include temporary partitions or portable spray booths.
